What is Saxende?
Saxenda is an injectable, once-a-day, drug similar to the natural GLP-1 hormone. It regulates appetite by reducing the feeling of appetite and hunger and increasing the feeling of satiety. This will make you eat less and therefore lose weight. The injections are available by prescription only. You can easily administer the injections yourself with a pre-filled pen. Before you use the pen for the first time, we will show you how to use the pen.
Liraglutide
Liraglutide is the active substance in Saxenda. A drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is an agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor, which helps to lower blood sugar by increasing insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon release from the pancreas. In addition, it slows down gastric emptying, which helps control appetite and promotes weight loss.
For the treatment of diabetes, liraglutide is usually prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise in patients who have not achieved adequate blood sugar control with other medications. It is given by injection under the skin and is available under different brand names depending on the country.
In the context of the treatment of obesity, liraglutide is prescribed at a higher dose than for diabetes and is marketed under the brand name Saxenda. It is used in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise to help overweight or obese people lose weight.
When can Saxenda be prescribed?
Saxenda (liraglutide) can be prescribed for the treatment of obesity in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of:
- 30 kg/m² or higher, or
- with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher who have obesity-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or dyslipidaemia (abnormal blood fat levels).
It is important to note that Saxenda is not intended as a standalone weight loss treatment. It should be used as part of a comprehensive weight management program combining diet, exercise and behavioral modification.

When is Saxenda reimbursed by health insurer?
- People with an extremely increased health risk associated with their weight. These are people with a BMI of 35 and above who have cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea or osteoarthritis, and people with a BMI of more than 40.
- Have participated in a GLI program recognized by RIVM for at least one year. The combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) helps overweight people exercise more and eat healthily. The goal is a lasting change in behavior.
- Not having type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Not (yet) eligible for operations such as stomach reduction.
- Attention! someone should stop taking Saxenda if weight has not decreased by at least 5 percent after 3 months of use.
Dosing schedule Saxenda Adults
Always use this medicine as your doctor has told you. Find below
you a simple dosing schedule that helps you build up the dosage of the
starting dose of 0.6 mg to the maximum dose of 3.0 mg.
- Week 1 - 0.6 mg once a day
- Week 2 - 1.2 mg once a day
- Week 3 - 1.8 mg once a day
- Week 4 - 2.4 mg once daily
- Week 5 - 3.0 mg once daily
The dosing schedule is designed to reduce the risk of nausea when starting
with Saxenda®. Because you slowly increase the dosage, you can
your body will adjust to the medication and the nausea will usually go away
to decrease. Your doctor may adjust the dosing schedule if you do not get the side effects
can tolerate.
Side effects Saxenda
Like all medications, Saxenda® can cause side effects, although not
everyone will experience it. The most common side effects of Saxenda®
are headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting. These side effects
usually disappear after a few days or weeks. A full list of side effects can be found in the information leaflet in the packaging of your Saxenda® pen.
Storage advice
For use:
Save Saxenda®
before first use in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2°C to 8°C. Do not store in the freezer or near the freezer compartment. When Saxenda® has been frozen, it loses its effect.
When using:
After first use, Saxenda® can be stored for one month below 30°C or in a refrigerator (2°C – 8°C). Keep the cap on the pen ter
protection from light. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date. which is stated on the label of the pen and on the carton after EXP. There is a month and a year. The last day of that month is the expiration date.
Have you forgotten Saxenda® to use?
If you miss a dose and remember within 12 hours of when you usually take it, inject the medicine as soon as you remember.
However, if it is more than 12 hours since you should have used Saxenda®, skip the missed dose and inject the next dose the next day
at the usual time. Do not take a double dose the next day to make up for the forgotten dose. You should also not increase the dose the next day
to make up for a forgotten dose.
Needles for your Saxenda® pen
The pen is designed to be used with NovoFine® disposable needles with a length between 4 and 8 mm and a thickness of 30-32G. A new needle should be used for each injection. The pen and needles should never be shared with others.

How much does the treatment with slimming injections cost?
